Wethersfield, CT…Wethersfield Historical Society is pleased to announce two lectures coming up on March 8th and 22nd, featuring two local college professors turned authors speaking about their new books. Both lectures will take place at 7:00 p.m. at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street, Wethersfield, with book signings at 6:30 p.m.

On Monday, March 8, Professor Briann G. Greenfield of Central Connecticut State University will present “Out of the Attic,” based on her new book of the same name. In this era of Antiques Roadshow and eBay, it is hard to imagine a time when Americans did not treasure the home furnishings of elite early American families. But as this book demonstrates, antiquing – particularly the practice of valuing old things for their aesthetic qualities – is a relatively recent invention whose origins can be found in the early years of the twentieth century. In Out of the Attic, Briann Greenfield traces the transformation of antiques from family keepsakes to valuable artistic objects. She also delves behind popular rhetoric to examine the development of a retail structure specifically designed to facilitate the buying and selling of old wares. Join us for a lively presentation and discussion on March 8th.

On March 22, State Historian and UConn Professor Walter Woodworth will present a multimedia exploration of “New England’s OTHER Witch Hunt.” A generation before Salem, New England was beset by another terrifying and deadly witch panic in Hartford and Wethersfield. Based on his new book Prospero’s America: John Winthrop, Jr., Alchemy, and the Creation of New England Culture, Woodward will bring the events surrounding the witch hunt to life, exploring the context, actions, and consequences of this horrific event. You’ve always known about Salem; now learn the rest of the story.

Admission for the lectures is $5 for non-member adults, free to historical society members. The Keeney Memorial Cultural Center offers free parking and is handicapped accessible. For more information, contact the historical society at 860.529.7656

      HISTORICAL SOCIETY CELEBRATES TOWN’S 375TH

New Photograph Exhibit Opens September 24th

As part of the Town of Wethersfield’s ongoing celebration of its 375th Anniversary (1634-2009), Wethersfield Historical Society will be opening a new exhibit based on its recently published book of photographs, “Wethersfield – Images of America.” The exhibit will feature more than 100 images selected from the society’s collections as well as those from private collections belonging to individuals, organizations, clubs and houses of worship. The large format photographs and insightful text panels will detail the town’s “recent” history from the 1860s through 2008, reflecting the diverse, complex and multi-faceted community that Wethersfield has become in its 375th year.

A special opening reception will be held on Thursday, September 24th from 6-8pm at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street. The event is open to the public and will feature light refreshments. Everyone is welcome to help Wethersfield celebrate this important anniversary.

The exhibition is supported by grants from the Greater Hartford Arts Council and the Keeney Trust at the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, which will allow the society to complement the photographs with several hands-on components and interactive ways for additional community participation. Within the exhibition, special education trunks can be used inside the gallery or taken “on the road” to participating classrooms. These trunks will allow young people the opportunity to experience the hands-on material culture, as seen in the photographs, to reinforce learning and have fun at the same time. For more information, please contact the society offices as (860) 529-7656 or visit our website at www.wethhist.org Happy Anniversary, Wethersfield!

”Welcome Home,” Wethersfield Historical Society’s upcoming house tour on Saturday, June 13, from 10-4, will feature eight unique homes and two Bed and Breakfasts. This popular fundraiser, one of the events celebrating the town’s 375th anniversary, will offer something for every taste, whether it be an elegant 18th century Colonial, an exquisitely restored Victorian mansion, a 1920s Dutch Colonial or a modern home with a magnificently updated kitchen. Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage is the event’s Corporate Sponsor.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 on tour day and may be purchased by mail or in person at the historical society’s headquarters at 150 Main Street, Wethersfield, CT 06109, open Tuesday-Friday, 9-4. Additionally, tickets may be purchased at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street, (open Monday-Saturday, 10-4, Sunday, 1-4) and at Coldwell Banker, located at 1331 Silas Deane Highway. On tour day, they will be available at Tour Central at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street, Wethersfield.
(read more below the 'fold')
Among the private homes on tour, two are historic properties located in Old Wethersfield. One is a house built in 1725 by Ezra Webb, which has a 1978 addition off the kitchen. The other is the Abraham Crane House, built in 1770, whose keeping room features wooden floors, built-in cupboards and a wood-beamed ceiling. Also located in Old Wethersfield are the two Bed and Breakfasts on the tour. The stately Chester Bulkley House, at 184 Main Street, was built in 1830 and is decorated with many lovely antiques. The other B & B is the striking Silas Robbins House at 185 Broad Street, painstakingly restored by hosts John and Shireen Aforismo and opened in 2007. In most cases, the first level of the private homes and the B & B’s will be open for viewing.

In “new” Wethersfield, the six remaining homes include a two-family built in 1926 which has been renovated. Both levels will be open to the public and the varied décor reflects the taste of the two different generations occupying them. Next is a 1939 home built as part of the Floral Park Development. Five rooms, including a state of the art kitchen, will be open along with two porches.

The remaining four homes include a 1963 home with extensive renovations, some done by the homeowner himself; a 1965-66 Griswold-built home which began its life as a traditional Colonial and has blossomed out into a showpiece (both levels will be open); a 1984 home with a dramatic entrance foyer and sunken living room; and a 1989 LaCava-built house (with an added deck and pool) set at a unique angle on its corner lot.

The House Tour Committee, chaired by Candace Holmes, has been at work since last fall, selecting homes for the tour, researching the history of each home and working with the homeowners on details for tour day. The tour book, which all visitors will receive as their ticket, will have brief backgrounds on the houses and insight into the significant architectural and design features of each home. In addition, guides in each of the rooms on display will provide specific information on the home’s special features as well as changes made over time.

The tour will be held rain or shine. For more information on ticket purchase, call the Wethersfield Historical Society at 860.529.7656 or visit the web site: www.wethhist.org.

The Home Garden Club will present a Garden Tour, also celebrating the town’s 375th anniversary, on Saturday, June 6, from 10-4. “Everyday Gardening for the Everyday Gardner” will feature several gardens displaying a selection of annuals, perennials and specialty plants. Cost for the Garden Tour is $10 in advance, $15 on tour day. For more information, contact the Home Garden Club at 860.257.7859.

The lightning-caused fire in October 2007 at the Keeney Memorial had closed the Wethersfield Museum and the rental venue for six months, but it reopened on March 27 for a "Thank You" reception to the many volunteers who helped fight the fire, protect the collection, and get the historic structure back "on the job."

This year’s seventh annual Wethersfield Antiques Show, to be held on November 16th and 17th, promises to be a great way to start the holiday shopping season. Held at the Pitkin Community Center, 30 Greenfield St., Wethersfield, CT, the show is sponsored by Wethersfield Historical Society, celebrating its 75th anniversary of “preserving and teaching history.” This established show features a gala Preview Party on Friday evening, November 16, as well as an Early Buying session one hour prior to the show’s opening on Saturday, November 17. Admission to the show is $6.00, $5.00 with discount coupons or show cards. Admission to the Early Buying session is $10. For more information, call the historical society at 860.529.7656.

The Preview Party, which usually hosts about 150 eager collectors and buyers, will take place from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. on Friday evening, November 16. Admission to the party is $30 and includes hot and cold hors d’oeuvres and beverages, as well as an opportunity to chat with the dealers and purchase items. Reservations for the Preview Party are not required, but are appreciated.

The Early Buying session, popular with dedicated collectors who want an early look, will be from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, November 17, before the show opens to the general public. Admission for this session is $10, open to anyone, and during this time patrons may browse the show and purchase items and remain for the duration of the show.

Show manager Joan Hughes will welcome 45 of the finest dealers from the northeast in attractive room-setting booths. The show is expanding into new areas of the Community Center and will feature an expanded Attic Treasures area and lunchroom, the Sunflower Café. Also
included this year will be booth chats with several dealers about their specialties. These will take place between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and a schedule will be posted at the show entrance.

Participating in the booth chats this year will be Charlotte Jason of Meadowbrook Farm, Canterbury, CT, who will speak on textiles. She has been in the business with her husband for twenty-five years, the last ten specializing in linens only. Vintage linens, often found in old
drawers and cedar chests, have many uses to show their beauty as Charlotte will explain in her booth chat.

Marvin and Barbara Eliot of Windsor, CT, have traveled to many states in the last 35 years. In 1986, they decided to specialize in Pottles and Panekins, now the name of their shop. Marvin will show and tell by example how to cook, collect and decorate with their hearthside cooking utensils.

Historical Society director Doug Shipman commented that, “The Wethersfield Antiques Show is pleased to be able to expand this year and offer unique settings for the many dealers who return year after year. The show has truly become an event that dealers and visitors alike don’t want to miss!”

There is a loyal core of more than 40 dealers who have done the show for several years and will be returning this year. Among those are Country Squire Antiques of Gorham, ME, New England Home Antiques of Wethersfield, CT and Martha Caverly of Portsmouth, NH. Among those new to the show this year is Nutmeg Treasures, Inc. of Glastonbury, Pioneer Folk Art LLC from Ellsworth, Maine and John Gould of New York. As it has since the show’s inception, Wethersfield Historical Society will offer coffee, muffins and a light lunch in the Sunflower Café, open 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The popular Attic Treasures booth, in a new expanded space, will also be open during the show. Offering quality smalls and collectibles, this is among the most popular stops for show patrons.

Proceeds from this major fund raising event will benefit the Fountain of Service and Memorial Gardens at the Wethersfield Museum, Keeney Memorial, 200 Main Street. The fountain honors Patricia and the late Henry Allen and all volunteers in service to Wethersfield. The adjacent gardens, with their unique sculpture and restful benches, were established to honor the late Clinton “Jiggs” Hughes, former Fire Chief. Another beneficiary of this event will be the educational programming offered year-round by the historical society. Programs are provided free to students in Wethersfield public schools and for modest fees to outside towns.

The Pitkin Community Center offers free parking and easy accessibility on one floor. For more information, please contact Wethersfield Historical Society at 860.529.7656 or by e-mail at weth.hist.society@snet.net. The Society’s web site, wethhist.org, has a complete calendar of events for the year.

Wethersfield Historical Society is a membership supported, non-profit educational organization offering year-round programs for children and adults.

The Keeney Memorial Cultural Center, 200 Main Street, Wethersfield, sustained a lightning strike and fire on the evening of October 11, 2007. Lightning struck the base of the cupola and fire damaged the cupola and some slate roofing. Water used to extinguish the fire caused damage to the interior of the building.

While the damage to the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center is serious in terms of both fire damage to the cupola and roofing, as well as the water damage to the interior walls, ceilings and flooring, the Town and the society are very fortunate in that there was no significant damage to the museum collections or exhibits.

(read more "below the fold")
Wethersfield Historical Society is deeply appreciative of the dedication and professionalism of the fire fighters and key Town of Wethersfield staff who responded to this emergency, as well as the countless volunteers, friends and professional colleagues who provided assistance in the hours immediately following the fire.

The society’s most sensitive artifacts have been removed to alternative storage as a precaution against the conditions that currently exist within the building. The exhibit “V for Victory: Wethersfield and World War II” has been dismantled and loaned objects will be returned to contributors over the coming weeks, with our sincere gratitude.

The society anticipates a full recovery of normal operations at the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center. Recovery and restoration are currently underway and full museum and cultural center operations are expected to resume in the near future. Wethersfield Historical Society will operate an interim Visitor Center and Museum Shop at the Old Academy, 150 Main Street, Wethersfield, during the restoration period. The Old Academy will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. from Monday through Saturday, and from 1:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Sunday. The Old Academy also houses the society offices and public research library.

All inquiries concerning the Keeney Memorial Cultural Center programs, operations and rentals may be directed to the society offices at 860.529.7656 or to weth.hist.society@snet.net.
